1. Intro: Why Is Hanle So Special? Hanle is India’s first Dark Sky Reserve, which means strict rules are in place to prevent light pollution — making its night sky one of the clearest in the world.
Location Magic: The village of Hanle lies close to the Tibet border, in the Changthang region’s cold desert, at an altitude of 4,500 meters (about 14,764 feet) above sea level.
The Big Draw: With over 300 clear nights a year, Hanle is the perfect place to witness the Milky Way, planets, and distant galaxies with the naked eye.

2. The Celestial Experience (Heavenly Adventure)
This section describes what visitors can see and experience:
The Milky Way View:
In Hanle, the Milky Way shines so brightly it feels almost touchable. The best time to view it is between March and October.
Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO):
Hanle hosts one of Asia’s highest observatories, the IAO. Although tourists are usually not allowed inside, its very presence proves how ideal Hanle’s skies are for astronomy.
Constellations & Meteor Showers:
You can easily spot numerous stars and constellations that are invisible from cities. During major meteor showers like the Geminids, there’s no better place to watch than Hanle.
3. Planning Your Astro-Trip (Practical Information)
This is the most important section with detailed travel guidance:

Summer/Monsoon (May to September): Roads remain open, weather is mild, and stargazing is great.
Winter (October to March): Heavy snowfall and extreme cold make travel tough, but the sky is crystal clear. This season is recommended only for experienced travelers.
B. Permits & Permissions
Protected Area Permit (PAP): Hanle lies in a protected region, so visitors must obtain a PAP, available online or through authorized travel agents in Leh.
IAO Visit (Not Recommended): General public entry is restricted. It’s better to spend your time stargazing instead.
C. Accommodation & Food
Homestays Only: There are no luxury hotels or resorts in Hanle — only simple, cozy local homestays.
The Experience: You’ll mostly get traditional Ladakhi or Tibetan food. Don’t miss chatting with your hosts — they often share fascinating local astronomy myths and stories.
Note: Facilities like electricity and hot water are limited, so be prepared.
D. Health & Acclimatization
Altitude Sickness (AMS): At 4,500m, the risk of AMS is high.
Tip: Spend at least 2–3 days in Leh before heading to Hanle to acclimatize properly.
Stay Hydrated and avoid rapid ascent to prevent health issues.
4. Must-Do Activities in Hanle (Things to Do)
Visit Hanle Monastery: A beautiful 17th-century monastery (Gompa) set against a dramatic sky backdrop — perfect for daytime exploration.
Book a Stargazing Session: Local astro-tour operators offer high-powered telescopes and guided tours to observe stars, planets, and galaxies — ideal for beginners.
Try Astrophotography: Bring a wide-angle lens, tripod, and red-light flashlight for capturing breathtaking night-sky shots.
